Since ! It was an adventure, exciting, enriching and something everyone should do if they have the guts and the wherewithal to do it. Many years back we took a chance by moving abroad from the UK. It was great for the first few years as we had to learn the culture and deal with living in a foreign language. But after a while we found we were just in the same old rat race — just in another country. I recently suggested to my wife that we should do something similar to this [the Meek] family, but only after our daughter has finished school.

I am not surprised that one year [away] was not enough. My daughter is now fluent and literate in Mandarin and Spanish and skipped ahead enough to start college at 14 with a 4. Our campervan for Europe was much older than yours, but we managed to bring along a keyboard, violin and guitar. One can live so much cheaper on the road that I would consider looking for teaching jobs online as they are plentiful. My daughter even started teaching her languages online and in person at 12 to adults and children.

Good luck!! Just learning other cultures is a gift you give the children so they are not so isolated unto themselves. We now face the problem that one of us is rather exhausted and wants to settle near the grandchildren and the other is still up for adventure.

We do what plenty of our friends do: now and then have an adventure together. There are not many things that wind me up more than parents taking kids out of school to do daft stuff like this.

Kids need to go to school. No young people angling or on bikes. When I was 14 my dad allowed me to live on a boat on my own in Norfolk in my summer holidays. He would doubtless be shot for that now, but I regard it as character-forming. My dad was in the army, so every couple of years we would move somewhere new and start all over. It was OK in the early years but by the time I was 14 I hated it.

When I had kids I was determined that they would have stability and spend their childhoods in one place. The most important thing in their lives — and maybe hard for parents to accept — is time with their peer group, not their family. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. You can also rest easy knowing we conduct safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.

We strive to use travel as a force for good. Come for the beautiful landscapes and chatter with local farmers; stay for the cute wildlife, such as alpacas, vicunas and llamas. With palaces, forts, festivals and wildlife encounters to take the breath away, Rajasthan is a must-see for all families. We stay in century-old heritage accommodation, living the life like a Maharaja and Maharani. Trace the tracks of Bengal tigers in the jungle, wander through lush palace gardens, clock the famous Taj Mahal and ride the rails through the sun-kissed countryside. View trip.

Dig a little deeper and find galleries, boutiques, wood workshops and a colourful heritage of Portuguese, British, French and Jewish influences. We take a lot of care choosing your accommodation and try to avoid the big chain hotels. Your accommodation could be a locally run hotel in Europe, a jungle lodge in Latin America, or a small, family friendly hotel. No matter where you stay, it will be of good quality and most rooms will feature ensuites and air conditioning as standard. Learn more about accommodation. Most of our trips are also available as private departures and come with all the excitement and inclusions of a regular departure, but we can tweak and adjust the details until they fit just right.
